Three months ago, Suguna (name changed) walked into my cabin with our staff supporting her to walk. Upon diagnosing her, I began the treatment for a complex case of Rheumatoid Arthritis. She is now finding healing through the prescribed medications and therapies. During her recent follow-up consultation, I observed changes and relief on her face.
However, the inspiration to write this article came from the memory of her first consultation. I don’t understand till date, but, I am certain that it's either because people perceive medical expenses or consultation fees as something to be avoided, and they opt for over-the-counter medications to get rid of the problem. Or it could be because people fear doctors may deliver scary news, which they may not be ready to hear. These are the two most common reasons I have heard from even close family circles too. However, I wonder why people don't give a second thought to the value of their own lives when considering the cost of consultation fees. Moreover, if a doctor delivers unexpected news, a fear that people may harbour, it's essential to remember that medical professionals are numerous. Individuals still have the option to seek multiple opinions from other doctors for clarification.
The message I wish to convey in this paragraph is that it's wise to seek the help of medical experts rather than relying solely on over-the-counter quick fixes or home remedies. Sole dependence on the latter may lead to medical complications. And also, if these quick fix drugs or over the counter medicines are used without a doctor's advice, they may temporarily hide the pain in the bones & joints, but some of them may have adverse effects or trigger allergic reactions because they are not designed for each individual's body. Therefore, it is better to seek the advice of medical professionals than to encounter problems later. Not to scare people, but to raise awareness, Rheumatoid arthritis complications can include everything from persistent, recurrent, and difficult to manage joint and bone pain to functional impairment that limits an individual's activities and negatively impacts their mental and physical well-being effecting their overall lifestyle.
Alright, let me first give a little overview of Rheumatoid Arthritis before discussing its symptoms and management. Rheumatoid arthritis, or RA as it is more commonly abbreviated, is a disorder that mostly affects the joints and causes pain, inflammation, and occasionally swelling as well. In the early stages, it may only show up as organ-specific joint discomfort that eventually spreads to affect the bones of several organs. The frequency and duration of pain increase with the advancement of this condition. Hence, as with any other medical conditions, the earlier the diagnosis, the better the treatment outcome. Now let us move ahead and delve into the symptoms, diagnostic methods, and various treatment options available for individuals living with rheumatoid arthritis.
